His suprise attack from the creature's blindside had worked and bought him ample time, however what he did not expect was that afterwards blow per blow his opponent would match him and even if it felt like his bones were being crushed slowly, Sylvan remained standing returning attacks of his own. That's right, it may seem stupid but he was holding on to his pride, holding on to this long repressed hate and anger. However, Sylvan noticed something, the creature was slowly opening it's maw again, it was preparing that same old move again, so Sylvan jumped backwards in anticipation of the move, could he dodge it? and if worse comes to worse, could he deflect or even block it? Unthinkable yes, but there was no time to doubt now, to doubt is to die. Raising his blade up he took a deep breath, refocusing himself and leaning on his second wind to help him continue the fight.
